京都を拠点に、日本各地の豊かな自然素材や古来の技法を探求し、現代の様式へと昇華する衣の創作を展開。演劇・コンテンポラリーバレエ・創作舞踊など、国内外の気鋭の演出家・振付家・舞踊家の舞台作品に衣裳デザイン・制作で携わる。Noismや森優貴の作品にも参加している。

また、西本願寺・東寺で開催された「音舞台」などの世界遺産の空間で、音楽を中心とした芸術舞台にも携わり、衣を通して音と身体と空間の関係性を探る創作を行っている。

日本の伝統装束や「バレエ・リュス（Ballets Russes）」における歴史的衣裳の再現制作を通じて、時空や文化を越える「衣のかたち」を記録と実践の両面で現代に継承。

服飾研究ブランド『ichiru』では、東西・古今の“あわい”に佇む一着を制作し、個々の存在感を引き出す日常のオートクチュールを展開。素材と文化と身体が交わる新たな衣服の可能性を提案する。

京都市立銅駝美術工芸高等学校ファッションアート科、京都造形芸術大学修了。劇団四季衣裳部にて数々の大型作品に携わった後、2010年「HANA DESIGN ROOM」を設立。2018年より京都芸術大学非常勤講師、鷺森神社雅楽保存会所属。

​​​Hanako Washio

Costume & Fashion Designer · Artist 

Based in Kyoto, Hanako Washio explores the potential of traditional Japanese materials and techniques, reimagining them through contemporary forms of expression. Her work spans theater, contemporary ballet, and creative dance, collaborating with renowned directors and choreographers in Japan and abroad—including productions by Noism and Yuki Mori.

She has also contributed costume design to large-scale music and art performances such as “Oto Butai” at Nishi Honganji and To-ji temples, where sacred architecture meets music, light, and movement. Through these collaborations, she seeks to weave together body, sound, and fabric in a resonant spatial experience.

Washio engages in both the documentation and reconstruction of historical costumes, including traditional Japanese attire and costumes from the Ballets Russes, bridging cultural and temporal boundaries through her research and practice.

Her own fashion research brand ichiru creates bespoke garments that dwell in the in-between—of East and West, past and present—offering a quiet couture that draws out the wearer’s natural presence. Each piece is rooted in materiality and bodily sensibility, proposing a new relationship between clothing and life.

Graduated from Kyoto City Dohda Arts and Crafts High School and Kyoto University of Art and Design. Formerly with the costume department of Shiki Theatre Company, and since founding HANA DESIGN ROOM in 2010, she has been actively working across performance, research, and design. Since 2018, she also teaches at Kyoto University of the Arts and is a member of the Gagaku Preservation Society of Saginomori Shrine.
